The formula

  1. Fitted and flat sheet in washed cotton percale.
  2. A lightweight cotton quilt, folded at the base.
  3. A linen duvet, pulled loosely — never tucked.
  4. Two euro shams behind two standard pillows.
  5. One throw, folded in thirds, off-center.

Fabric over thread count

Thread count is largely marketing above 400. Percale sleeps cool and crisp; sateen sleeps smooth and warm; linen softens for years. Pick by how you sleep, not by number.

Color discipline

Keep the base neutral and let a single tonal color enter through the quilt or shams. Beds with more than three colors read busy in photos and in person.

Care

Wash linens weekly in cold water and skip fabric softener — it coats fibers and kills the drape that made you buy them.
