A gallery wall fails for one of two reasons: the spacing drifts, or every frame is the same.
Choose one of three layouts
### The salon cluster
Anchor with the largest piece slightly off center, then build outward keeping two to three inches between frames. Best over a sofa or console.
The single line
Frames of varying widths sharing one horizontal center line at 57 to 60 inches. Best in hallways.
The loose grid
Same frame, same mat, varied images. Reads calm and modern, and forgives mismatched photo sizes.
Mix frames on purpose
Pick two finishes — say warm oak and thin black metal — and repeat both at least twice. One odd frame reads as a mistake; two reads as a choice.
Use paper templates
Trace each frame onto kraft paper, mark the hanger point, and tape the sheets to the wall. Live with the arrangement for a day before you drill. This step removes almost every regret.
Heights and hardware
Center the whole arrangement at 57 inches, or six to eight inches above a sofa back. Use two hooks per frame over 16 inches wide so nothing tilts.
