If your office shares a wall with your living room, it has two jobs: work well at 10am and disappear at 8pm.
Place the desk for light, not for the wall
Facing a window gives glare; backing a window puts you in silhouette on video calls. Perpendicular to the window is almost always right — daylight across the desk, no backlight.
If you have to face a wall
Hang one large piece of art at seated eye level. It gives your eyes somewhere to rest and photographs far better than a bare wall behind you.
Cables are decor decisions

- Velcro ties, cut to length, not zip ties
Tidy cables are the single biggest visual difference between a desk that looks residential and one that looks corporate.
Two lamps beat one overhead
A task lamp on the desk at 3000K keeps you alert during work hours. A small warm lamp on a nearby shelf at 2700K is the one you leave on in the evening, which is what makes the corner read as living room again.
Close the day
A shallow tray or a single drawer that swallows the laptop, notebook and charger at the end of the day is what actually lets the room switch modes.
